The Tampa Bay Region is booming. Increasing population, community development, and fast-growing markets demand for more exhibition, education, special events and sustainability programming from the Tampa Museum of Art. To meet those needs, the Museum has renovated and is expanding its existing building. This transformational project will ensure a lasting cultural presence in the region.

The Tampa Museum of Art’s transformative renovation and expansion plans for its downtown Tampa campus, enhances the visitor experience and public access, more than triples its education and exhibition spaces, increases the museum’s sustainability and income generation abilities, and completes a cultural landmark for the City.

In 2023, the Museum completed its 25,000 square foot renovation of existing space which included the addition of seven new gallery spaces, enhanced visibility on the first floor, a redesigned lobby and store, and an 8,000 SF Vinik Family Education Center. When completed , the future expansion will add a crystalline, four-story structure to the waterfront adding approximately 51,000 square feet of programmable space along the Hillsborough River that includes a complete site redevelopment of the surrounding area.

Centennial Renovation, 2021-2023

All completed renovations within the Tampa Museum of Art’s existing building reallocted existing back-of-the-house areas to increase exhibition space and education facilities to accommodate growing community partnerships and allow more hands-on, up-close experiences for students and adults. The Tampa Museum of Art was proud to welcome students to its newly completed Vinik Family Education Center in summer of 2022.

Centennial Expansion

The transformative 51,000 square foot expansion plan for its downtown Tampa campus will add a crystalline, four-story structure to the waterfront, significantly enhancing the visitor experience and expanding the Museum’s programmable and event spaces. This addition will be imperative to sustaining the Museum’s growing programs and offerings.

Project Architects and Scope

New York-based WEISS/MANFREDI Architecture/Landscape/Urbanism has had the pleasure of collaborating with the Tampa Museum of Art on the centennial renovation and expansion project since the fall of 2018.

WEISS/MANFREDI Architecture/Landscape/Urbanism is a multidisciplinary design practice based in New York City. Founded by Marion Weiss and Michael Manfredi, the firm is known for the dynamic integration of architecture, art, infrastructure, and landscape design. Their work is noted for the strategic engagement of architecture and site and recognizes the critical dialogue between enclosed and open spaces, between new and existing structures, and between building and city.
